Do certifications actually help you get hired or is portfolio all that matters?

Certifications are not useless but they are also not the golden ticket that course platforms make them out to be, because a certificate tells a hiring manager that you completed a structured program while a portfolio tells them that you can actually build something real and deliver a result that did not come with step by step instructions holding your hand. The uncomfortable truth is that two candidates where one has five certificates and no projects and the other has zero certificates but three deployed applications will almost never end the same way, because what you have built will always speak louder than what you have been awarded.
